YOUNG CHEF
Cheryl Tsang, a fifth year pupil at Castlehead High School, will be representing Paisley in the Regional Final of the Rotary sponsored ’Young Chef of the Year’ competition in January.

Cheryl was up against the clock and three of her fellow Castlehead classmates when they told by Home Economics teacher, Andrew Simpson, to start the ’cook-off’. Then they had 90 minutes to prepare a main course and a sweet for Pascal Eck, the Executive Chef of the Glynhill Hotel, Renfrew and main judge of the competition.
Cheryl, Emma Rennie, Kayleigh Shaw, both in fifth year and fourth year Natasha Caplan had carefully chosen the menus they were going to prepare with the intention of making the two courses complement each other. But as Cheryl commented after her win, “Cooking is a passion of mine but I was still really nervous at the start. I felt sure my menu would be as success, but you never know until the end.”
She then went on to describe her menu, “ My main course was Baked Salmon with a couscous herb crust, accompanied with hedgehog potatoes, Carrots and asparagus and my sweet consisted of chocolate mousse sponge towers with chocolate sauce.“  That was enough for Pascal who was impressed by the overall standard of all the contestants.
He said, “All the dishes were quite varied and required a range of technical skills. However, I wasn’t only judging their cooking skills but was also looking for choice and use of ingredients and the final presentation of the two courses.” and he continued, “It was a difficult job to separate the four entrants, but on balance Cheryl did just enough to win.”
